Emissions Protest

In the 1980’s Metro began construction of an emissions testing facility in the 1200 block of 5th Avenue North. The neighborhood residents came together to protest this project because the facility would forever occupy a site that could be developed as urban housing and it would significantly increase traffic in the neighborhood. Residents staged a “drive-in,” where they packed the streets with as many cars as possible to simulate the future congestion. They walked picket lines while enjoying the appetizers and drinks provided by The Mad Platter. Some even laid down in front of heavy machinery. Protesters were arrested. That did not deter their efforts and ultimately Metro abandoned the project.
